Data Analyst Interview Questions & How to Answer Them
8 questions you're likely to get for a data analyst role, with a tip on what actually makes a strong answer.
Question 1
Walk me through a project from question to recommendation.
Narrate the full arc - the business question, the data pull, the analysis, and what decision it drove.
Question 2
How do you handle messy or incomplete data?
Give a specific example of a cleaning/validation approach, not a general statement about "data quality."
Question 3
How would you explain a complex finding to a non-technical stakeholder?
Practice simplifying without dumbing down - use an analogy or a clear visual framing.
Question 4
Tell me about a time your analysis was wrong. What happened?
Own it and explain the safeguard you added afterward.
Question 5
How do you check that your numbers are right before you share them?
Describe concrete checks: reconciling to a trusted source, sanity ranges, testing a query on a small sample, and having someone review it. Accuracy habits matter more than tools.
Question 6
How do you decide whether a difference in results is meaningful or just noise?
Show basic statistical judgement: sample size, variability and how you would explain your confidence in plain terms to someone who doesn't know statistics.
Question 7
Tell me about a dashboard or report you built that people actually used.
Focus on who used it, what decision it informed and how you learned what they needed. Usage is the proof it was useful.
Question 8
What do you do when a stakeholder asks a vague question like "why did sales drop?"
Show that you clarify the question, break it into testable ideas and agree what a useful answer looks like before you start digging.
