Software Engineer Resume Examples & Templates
A software engineer's resume gets scanned for concrete signal fast: languages, systems you've actually shipped, and the scale you operated at. Vague "worked on backend systems" lines get skipped over in favor of specifics.
What to include in a Software Engineer resume
- Lead with impact, not duties - "reduced API latency by 40%" beats "responsible for backend performance."
- Name the actual languages, frameworks, and infrastructure you used, not just "full-stack development."
- Include a link to GitHub or a portfolio if you have one - recruiters and hiring managers do check.
- Quantify scale where you can: requests per second, team size, users served, uptime.
Key skills to highlight
Software Engineer resume summary examples
A summary is two or three lines under your name. Start from the one closer to where you are, then swap in your own work and numbers.
Computer science graduate with two internships building web features in TypeScript and React. Shipped a student dashboard used by 300 people and cut its load time from 4 seconds to 1.5. Looking for a first full-time role on a product team.
Software engineer with 6 years building and running production services on AWS. Owned a payments service handling 2M requests a day, cut p95 latency by 40% and mentored four engineers. Looking for a senior role on a platform team.
Software Engineer resume bullet examples
Each bullet below says what changed, how much, and how. The numbers are examples: use your own, and only claim what you could explain in an interview.
Reduced p95 API latency by 40% with query indexes and a caching layer, on a service handling 2M requests a day.
Why it works: A change with a before and after, the method, and the scale it ran at.
Led the move from a monolith to 3 independently deployable services, cutting release time from 2 weeks to 1 day.
Why it works: Names the decision you led and what it changed for the team.
Built an event-driven order pipeline on Kafka that processed 50,000 events an hour with no data loss over 12 months.
Why it works: Throughput and reliability over a stated time, not only the technology.
Cut AWS spend by 28% ($11,000 a month) by right-sizing instances and removing unused resources.
Why it works: A saving in both percent and money, so it can be judged at any company size.
Mentored four junior engineers and ran weekly code reviews, shortening the average review from 3 days to 1.
Why it works: Shows leadership with a measurable effect, which matters from mid-level upward.
Common Software Engineer resume mistakes
Listing duties instead of results
"Responsible for the backend" says what your job was. Say what changed because you did it: faster, cheaper, more reliable, or used by more people.
A wall of every technology you have touched
Twenty tools in a skills block reads as none you know well. Put the ones you have shipped with first, in the order the job posting uses them.
No scale
"Built an API" could be a weekend project. Add the load, the users, the team size or the uptime, as long as it is true.
How an applicant tracking system reads a Software Engineer resume
Systems differ and none can promise a result, but these habits make a resume easier to read for most of them.
- Use the posting's own names for tools. If the job says PostgreSQL, write PostgreSQL and not only "Postgres" or "SQL": many systems compare the words, not the idea.
- Keep to one column with standard headings (Experience, Skills, Education). Tables, text boxes and icons standing in for skills can be read out of order or skipped.
- Put the main languages and frameworks in a skills section near the top, and repeat the most important ones in your bullets so they also appear in context.
